Russian tortoises are species of small, herbivore tortoises which are very popular as pets. They are known to be hardy and tough and can tolerate extreme temperatures.

    Color Reddish brown or black shell which fades to yellow between the scutes; straw-yellow and brown body color
    Distribution Afghanistan, Northern and Eastern Iran, Northern Pakistan, North Western China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan
    Habitat Dry open landscapes, sand and clay deserts with scanty grasses and bushes
    Diet Feeds on many types of weeds including leaves and flowers
    Hibernation Fact Hibernates underground in winter
    Predators Raccoons,  dogs, cats, possums
    Mode of Reproduction Oviparous (egg laying)
    Clutch Size 2 to 5 eggs
    Incubation Period 75 to 90 days
    Reproductive Age 10 years of age
    Average Lifespan 50 to 80 years but, are known to live for more than 100 years in few cases
    IUCN Conservation Status Vulnerable
